Full Field and Post Positions

The 152nd Kentucky Derby drew 20 starters after late scratches by Silent Tactic (foot injury, April 29) and Fulleffort (ankle, April 30). All horses originally in posts 14 and higher moved one spot toward the rail. Great White and Ocelli drew into the field as replacements.

Pre-Race Favorites

Renegade (4-1, Post 1). The Arkansas Derby winner enters as the morning-line favorite despite drawing the rail. No horse has won the Kentucky Derby from post 1 since Ferdinand in 1986. Trainer Todd Pletcher will saddle his 66th career Derby starter, the most in race history. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is expected to settle Renegade off the early pace and let him use his closing kick down the stretch.

Commandment (6-1, Post 6). The Florida Derby winner has rattled off four straight victories and looks tactically perfect for a 1 1/4-mile race. Trainer Brad Cox saddles two runners on the day, with Commandment the clear pick of the barn. Jockey Luis Saez has a workable inside trip from gate 6.

Further Ado (6-1, Post 17). The Blue Grass Stakes winner blew away his field by 11 1/2 lengths at Keeneland on April 4. The question is whether that effort was a career peak. Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, a three-time Derby winner, takes the call from a stalking position outside.

The Puma (10-1, Post 9). A live longshot at a fair price. The Puma was beaten a nose by Commandment in the Florida Derby and ran courageously throughout. The 8, 9 and 10 posts have a combined 23.9 percent win rate, the strongest three-post group in modern Derby history.

Chief Wallabee (8-1, Post 12). Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott returns with the same jockey, Junior Alvarado, who guided Sovereignty to victory in 2025. Chief Wallabee finished a closing third in the Florida Derby and adds blinkers for the Derby. Mott’s son, Riley Mott, also has two starters in the field.

Storylines to Watch

  • Bill Mott looks to repeat. Mott won the 2025 Derby with Sovereignty and the 2019 Derby with Country House. He saddles Chief Wallabee, while his son Riley sends out Albus and Incredibolt in his Derby debut as a trainer.
  • Pletcher’s record continues. Todd Pletcher will start his 66th Derby horse, by far the most in race history. He has won twice (Super Saver in 2010, Always Dreaming in 2017) and is seeking a third.
  • Baffert chases a seventh win. Bob Baffert has officially trained six Derby winners. His 2021 win with Medina Spirit was disqualified following a positive test for betamethasone. He saddles Potente and Litmus Test in 2026.
  • Two Japanese contenders. Wonder Dean (UAE Derby winner) and Danon Bourbon (undefeated in three starts) represent Japan. Forever Young finished third by two noses in a three-way photo finish in 2024, the closest a Japanese horse has ever come.
  • Cherie DeVaux for history. With Golden Tempo, DeVaux can become the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby.
  • No clear standout. The morning-line favorite is 4-1, the longest morning-line price for a Derby favorite in recent memory. Three of the last four Derby winners went off at 10-1 or longer.
